Pax Christi Ayiti (Pax Christi Haiti), known locally as SAKALA, provides a safe space in the heart of Haiti’s biggest slum, Cité Soleil, where all members of the community come together to build a culture of peace and self-empowerment.
Violence is the number-one cause of death in Cite Soleil, representing 30% of deaths in the area.
SAKALA promotes community spirit and conflict resolution working with young people between the ages of eight and 25.
The organisation’s 'sports for peace' programme uses sports as a vehicle to teach young people about leadership, conflict resolution, and fair play.
Education services include a community library, offering after-school lessons and peer tutoring; training; workshops; and school fees assistance.
SAKALA has Port au Prince's biggest urban garden where young people learn about respecting the environment and good nutrition. The food produced makes up part of the free meals that are on offer to all participants.
