On Sunday December 8 2013, eight leaders of eight extraordinary charities in Cambodia, India, Nepal, South Africa, Uganda and Senegal travelled to London.
Their organisations had each won an Impact Award, and they arrived in England's capital for the annual Impact Awards Week.
The week, organised by Stars, is part of their Award package – which also includes US$100,000 in unrestricted funding – and is a chance for these NGO leaders to network, receive training and share with one another about the realities of working on the front line in global development. Having just joined the Stars Foundation, Awards Week was a fantastic way to get a real sense of the work that Stars Foundation conducts; especially how unrestricted funding is crucial for the work and sustainability of local NGOs.
It was inspiring to talk with the Award winners about the challenges that they are facing and how these grants will enable them to strengthen their organisations for the future. They expressed their gratitude for the trust and long term partnership that Stars establishes with them and wished that other donors would adopt the same approach.
